You Can’t Control Everything

This week, my sister and I are on a “sister vacation” that we’ve been planning since July.

Getting here was its own adventure, with several cancelled flights and other mishaps.

Still, we worked it all out and have enjoyed settling in, the change of scenery, and the time to relax and cultivate some space for reflection.

This morning, we woke up to an email about one of the activities we had planned being cancelled.

Because - I kid you not - there are too many crocodiles in the water.

Even when we plan really well - we can’t control all the circumstances.

That’s why great strategy is more about knowing ourselves, what we’re aiming for, and having good guardrails to guide our decision-making to get there than it is about creating a perfect plan.

You can set yourself - and your team - up for success by incorporating enough space and flexibility into your plans to pivot when needed.

Because there will be days when there are too many crocodiles in the water, and so you’ll have to find a different way to reach your goal.

As for us, we’re headed to check out the local farmers market. :)
