Leadership Lesson: The Right Time to Get Help

This morning at the beach, my son demonstrated one of the most important actions a leader can take.

After testing the waters, he ran back and said:

“It’s rough out there today, Mom. I’m going to wear my life vest.”

He didn’t worry about whether people would question his competence.

He didn’t worry that his friends weren’t doing the same thing.

He just knew that the waves were stronger than usual and that he could use a little extra support to keep his stamina up and not get pulled under.

I’ve learned in 20+ years of working with and advising nonprofit, corporate, and association executives that this is a rare skill.

Knowing when to bring in support - before you’re in a tough spot or too exhausted for the help to matter - can mean the difference between successfully surfing rough waves or getting tossed around in unforgiving waters.

If there’s support you’re thinking could help, try getting it now - before you’ve exhausted all your own energy and resources.

You’ll be helping yourself and modeling healthy leadership for your team.
